A better next brew.

Tell us what happened in the cup. We will explain the likely cause and give you one controlled change for your next brew.

The cup I am working towards

Keep the desired experience separate from what you taste now. Describe aroma, flavour, sweetness, acidity, mouthfeel and finish in your own words. Your taste and flow answers below determine the next adjustment.

Your machine and shot measurements

Exact next numbers are shown only for a confirmed VS3 scale and a move within the same numbered revolution. Other grinders receive a relative fine/coarse adjustment. Do not force the collar or grind at burr contact; follow your model’s adjustment instructions.

Before the next shot

Warm the machine and portafilter, then dry the basket. Weigh the grounds that actually reach the basket. Distribute evenly and tamp level until the bed stops compressing. Keep the beans, temperature, RPM and preparation the same while testing the next change. After brewing, let the machine release pressure before removing the portafilter.

For a non-pressurised basket, start with its rated dose and roughly twice that weight as espresso. About 20–30 seconds is a diagnostic reference, not a pass/fail target. Follow your machine’s timing convention consistently.
